Answer to Question 1

Difference between functional assessment and functional analysis:
Functional assessment consists of information-gathering strategies, including indirect and direct strategies. The information that is gathered from a functional assessment is based on antecedents and consequences of the behavior to identify patterns that lead to a hypothesis of the function of the behavior. Indirect information is gathered through behavioral interviews and behavioral rating scales. Direct information is gathered through observing the behavior. Strategies for direct information gathering include anecdotal notes, scatter plot analysis, and A-B-C descriptive analysis.
Functional analysis consists of manipulating the environment and observing the effects on the student's behavior in order to test a possible hypothesis of the function of the behavior. Five possible conditions are examined to determine the function of the behavior: attention, tangible, demand, alone, and play.
