Answer to Question 1

False

Answer to Question 2

There are two general ways to think about political identity: economic and
cultural. The first originates with the ideas of Karl Marx and suggests that classconsciousness,
self-awareness of the particular economic and political interests that
derive from one's economic position in societyfor example, as a farm laborer, an
industrial worker, or a financieris the primary way in which people think about
individual and collective political identity. Marx believed that workers' collective identity
as an economic class would facilitate their ability to form unions and advance their
interestsfor better wages and working conditions, for exampleagainst the interests
of wealthier members of society. But economic class offers an incomplete answer to
understanding political identity.
Around the world, many relatively poor people vote for conservative parties, and many
wealthier people vote for left-leaning parties. And in many poorer countries, economic
status explains relatively little compared to other forms of political identity. This brings
us to the second main form of political identity, cultural identity rooted in the ideas of
German sociologist Max Weber, who suggested that the strongest political identities
form along non-economic lines, among groups of people who share an understanding of
a common heritage based on different forms of cultureparticularly racial or ethnic
ties, religion, language, territory, or family ties.
