Answer to Question 1

Religiosity, nationalism, respect for hierarchical authority relations, and a belief in a clear difference between good and evil are all associated with respect for traditional forms of authority such as kings, tribal chiefs, and religious leaders. In contrast, people who are not religious tend to be more skeptical of authority figures. Further, those who support secularrational forms of authority are reluctant to affirm a simple difference between good and evil, and are more likely to accept independent judges, nonpartisan bureaucracies, or elected officials which are forms of authority present in democracies.

Answer to Question 2

People who indicate a concern for survival tend to respond to certain survey questions in a way that places a high value on the nuclear family, childrearing, and hard work. Also, they worry a great deal about having enough money and tend to express a desire for greater government involvement in the economy. In contrast, people who express concern for personal well-being place relatively higher value on quality-of-life issues such as individual freedom, leisure time, and being happy. Such individuals value work as a source of personal satisfaction, not because it provides them with subsistence, and value freedom of expression and the ability to participate in politics.
