There are two ways economic change leads to political change. The first
approach focuses on interestsspecifical ly, the way economic development can
bring about the rise of new social classes, who then have strong desire to fight for
access to political power. The second approach emphasizes identitiesspecifica lly,
the way economic modernization changes people's values so that they grow more
supportive of democracy.
