Answer to Question 1

Advantages and disadvantages to teaching generalization when student are fully served in general education
setting:
The recent focus of instruction for all students occurring in the general education setting have placed an increased importance on training for generalization. The general education classroom is set up very differently from the natural environment outside of the classroom. Therefore, it is vital that students be able to learn the skills they are taught within a controlled setting to the natural environment. The advantages to teaching generalization when students are served in the general education setting is that initial instruction and mastery can occur in a controlled setting without unplanned variations in the responses or behaviors. The disadvantage is the lack of natural contingencies that are available in the general education setting. While attempts maybe made to train for generalization, there is no way to ensure that generalization will occur.
