a. Define the team of rivals strategy as one whereby presidents assemble a diverse team of former political antagonists to include in their administration.
b. Discuss how the strategy was developed by Lincoln in the aftermath of the 1860 electoral victories when he filled three key cabinet positions with his competitors for the Republican presidential nomination in addition to including people with a wide range of views.
c. Explain how Obama employed the strategy by having Joe Biden serve as his vice president in addition to appointing Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, and how he went even further than Lincoln in expanding the ideological diversity of his administration by retaining Republican Robert Gates as Secretary of Defense.
d. Discuss the benefits that accrued to Hillary Clinton from this strategywhen she decided to run for the presidency in 2016, including gaining access to important Obama supporters and allowing her to sideline potential opponents such as Vice President Biden.
