  a. As a consequence of the addition of the aversive stimulus, the target behavior is strengthened.
  b. Like punishment, negative reinforcement is the addition of an aversive stimulus or the subtraction (taking away) of a pleasurable item or activity in an effort to change the frequency of a behavior.
