Recall elections permit citizens to attempt to remove elected public officials from office before the end of their term. Eighteen states permit the recall of at least some state-level officials; eleven of these states allow recalls for any reason while seven states require some sort of chargesincompetence, ethical violations, or suchto be made against the incumbent in order for a recall to occur.
