Personal powers of the governors typically stem from such factors as the size of their electoral victory, their job approval rating, and how far away their next election is.

An ideal response would be:
Before the American Revolution, royal governors were appointed by and responsible to the British crown and had broad powers, including extensive veto power over the elected colonial legislatures. As anti-British sentiment increased, royal governors became more and more unpopular. The position of state governor in the new Republic was born in this atmosphere of distrust.
