Answer to Question 1

An ideal response will:
1, Detail the purpose of CAFTA, which was to promote free trade among the United States and several Central American countries.
2, Describe the arguments given by those in favor of CAFTA, such as the economic benefits provided by increased competition, lower priced goods, and economic development in impoverished areas of Central America.
3, Describe the arguments given by those opposed to CAFTA, such as the potential loss of U.S. jobs and profits in some sectors of the economy.

Answer to Question 2

An ideal response will:
1, Identify globalization as the expansion of economic interactions between countries.
2, Outline the concern that foreign lobbying could lead representatives to pay more attention to foreign concerns than to the American public, and to respond in ways that are not in American national interests.
3, Note that another concern is that foreign nations and firms may move beyond seeking to influence political decisions and also seek to influence American economic decisions in ways that harm the United States.
