An ideal response will:
1, Define casework as the direct assistance that members of Congress give to individuals and groups within a district or state.
2, Define constituents as the people who reside within an elected official's political jurisdiction.
3, Define incumbent as the individual in an election who currently holds the contested office, as distinct from the challenger, who seeks to remove the incumbent from power.
4, Explain that politicians holding office have a direct advantage over political challengers in that they have the ability to use casework to provide assistance to individuals and groups within a district or state, something a challenger ordinarily does not have.

Answer to Question 2

An ideal response will:
1, Describe the process of presidential nomination with Senate confirmation.
2, Discuss the role of the Senate Judiciary Committee in the confirmation process.
3, Explain the role of senatorial courtesy in blocking a potential nominee.
