If the large financial donations by George Soros in 2004 and Sheldon Adelson in 2012 did not change the outcome of either election, why would they have bothered to give such large sums of money?
 
  a. Because they hoped to be associated with a winning candidate.
  b. Because they wanted to gain political favors from a candidate.
  c. Because they wanted to raise awareness about a candidate or an issue.
  d. Because they wanted to influence the outcome of future legislation.
  e. Because they believed private donations were more effective than public ones.

An ideal response will:
1, Describe a critical election (or realigning election) as a turning point, as an election that signals a major switch in party coalitions, usually during periods of historic change in the economy and society.
2, Explain that long-term party realignment is the usual result when one party takes over from another during a period when partisan preferences shift. May note (if applicable) that electoral realignment is sometimes a gradual process, not sudden and dramatic.
