Answer to Question 1

An ideal response will:
1, Compare the due process clause and the equal protection clause, noting that both appear in the Fourteenth Amendment and both are important for expanding civil rights.
2, Contrast the due process clause and the equal protection clause. An ideal response might note that the due process clause prohibits the government from taking away one's civil liberties arbitrarily. The equal protection clause, in contrast, requires that the states treat everyone equally, regardless of race.

Answer to Question 2

An ideal response will:
1, Discuss how unequal treatment of racial and ethnic minority groups based on practices rather than statutes or regulations remains a fact of life in the United States.
2, Identify that many African Americans and Hispanics feel that they have been treated unfairly in stores and restaurants because of their race. In addition, discuss how de facto discrimination still manifests in the treatment of these racial groups by law enforcement officials, noting that many young African American and Hispanic men are likely to experience negative contact with the police.
3, Identify how specific practices, such as stop and frisk and racial profiling, and voter identification laws could have a discriminatory effect in spite of a lack of a direct reference to race or ethnicity.
