Answer to Question 1

An ideal response will:
1, Discuss how media framing is the process by which the media create a context for a story that shapes the way that citizens perceive it.
2, Explain how the public can perceive the problem of poverty as ascribable to the laziness of the poor or to economic conditions, depending on whether the media run stories about poor individuals or stories about overall economic trends.

Answer to Question 2

An ideal response will:
1, Discuss the fact that most reporters in the United States are located in Washington, D.C., and in New York City.
2, Explain how this is a natural outgrowth due to the location of power centers in the United States, but it might also lead to a news media that is out of touch with average Americans, as evidenced by the geographic imbalance in news headlines by state.
