Answer to Question 1

An ideal response will:
1, Explain that petroleum, or oil, currently supplies over one-third of the total energy needs of the United States and that less than half of the oil we use is imported.
2, Discuss how dependence on foreign supplies of oil leaves the United States at the mercy of nations with whom we have (or may one day have) strained relationships, for example Russia and Middle Eastern countries.
3, Discuss the challenges in current domestic oil production: high costs and environmental concerns.
