By understanding the function a behavior is serving, it allows the practitioner to identify alternative behaviors that will 1) get the same amount or quality of reinforcement as the problem behavior, and 2) requires the same or less amount of effort to access the reinforcement. During a punishment procedure, this alternative response should be identified and provided through contingent access.
