Answer to Question 1

Studies have revealed that home literacy experiences (or the lack thereof) profoundly influence children's later literacy development and language development. One simple approach that significantly increases a child's involvement in the story time experience is called dialogic reading, and includes asking interactive questions throughout the story.

Answer to Question 2

Before beginning the teaching of writing, teachers need to make preparations. They need to consider their daily schedule. Where will forty-five to sixty minutes of writing workshop each day fit into the schedule? They need to arrange the classroom environment for talk among peers and for quiet writing. They need to create an area where all the writers can gather to share their drafts and finished pieces. They need to gather the needed materials and determine how best to arrange these materials for the writers' easy access. They need to make plans to teach their students how to write.
