Answer to Question 1

The IRE pattern of discourse occurs when a teacher asks a question, a student answers, and the teacher either accepts or rejects that answer and goes on to ask another question. These types of question and answer exchanges do not provide the type of language input and feedback needed to advance children's language skills. Teachers can provide richer oral language experiences for children by engaging them in reciprocal conversations and discussions; listening closely and responding to their comments; asking genuine, open-ended questions; welcoming the interjection of personal experiences; and encouraging childchild turn-taking interactions.

Answer to Question 2

1. Students must learn how to decode words by using phonics, context, or morphemic analysis.

2. Students must apply their decoding skills automatically for fluent reading of grade-level texts.

3. The main goal of reading comprehension instruction is to help students derive meaning from increasingly complex texts, including both literature and informational texts.

4. Ongoing informal assessment informs instruction, and grouping practices support the organization and delivery of instruction.
