Answer to Question 1

Teachers need a thorough knowledge of language and literacy guidelines for young children. This information may be obtained from several sources, including state standards and nationally defined outcomes.

Answer to Question 2

Each writing workshop begins with a focus lesson. The goal of such lessons is to teach children about some aspect of writing (e.g., how to make revisions, how to add describing words, how to spell words). The focus lesson is followed by writing time. During writing time, the teacher talks with individual children about their writing. Here, the teacher might help a child stretch words to hear sounds, add details to the child's drawing, or talk with the child about the topic of the piece. Through conferences, the teacher provides one-on-one instruction. After the writing time, two or three children will share their work with their peers and the teacher. Now, the teacher and the other children can ask questions about the writing.

People who have myopia, or nearsightedness, are not able to see objects at a distance but only up close. It occurs when the cornea is either curved too steeply, the eye is too long, or both. This condition is progressive and worsens with time. More than 100 million people in the United States are nearsighted, but only 20% of those are born with the condition. Diet, eye exercise, drug therapy, and corrective lenses can all help manage nearsightedness.
