Answer to Question 1

Some readers probably learned the names of the letters of the alphabet by singing the alphabet song. Today, the value of this activity gets mixed reviews. Some readers probably learned the names of the letters of the alphabet by studying a different letter each week. This approach receives some criticism today. Early childhood teachers should teach their young learners the names of the letters through explicit instruction. A teacher should remember that most children will not know the names of all the letters of the alphabet before they recognize and read whole words. A skillful teacher can link children's attention to highly meaningful words and key letters simultaneously.

There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. It is not a straight line, but "zig-zags" around various island chains. Therefore, Samoa and nearby islands have one date, while American Samoa and nearby islands are one day behind. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.
