Answer to Question 1

There is no one language that is spoken by a majority of the world's people, and there is increasing intra-linguistic diversity developing across populations. Also, languages constantly adapt and change.

Answer to Question 2

They can do this through examining core vocabulary and also through the use of glottochronology.
