Answer to Question 1

She taught him a vocabulary of about 150 signs which he then arranged into appropriate sentences. Although Kanzi has responded appropriately to more than 500 spoken English sentences, even Dr. Rumbaugh agrees that he uses the words more like tools than symbols.

Answer to Question 2

Children learn the language of their speech community. This needs to occur before the age of 6 (for a first language) in order for the child to develop normal language capacities.
