Answer: KWL charts are graphic organizers that assist students in organizing what they know and what they want to learn about or inquire into within an integrated unit help them to construct meaning from what they learn during a unit. They also assist teachers in assessing prior knowledge and monitoring progress. K = Teachers activate a student's prior knowledge and generate interest by asking what students already Know about the unit topic. W = Students inquire by specifying What they want to learn. L = After completing the unit, students discuss what they have Learned.

Answer: Methods to foster middle-school literary reading should focus on increasing students' awareness of genre and strategies to share their personal responses to literature. Genre wheels work well to expand students' knowledge and chart their progress in reading various genres. Strategies to share understanding include, but are not limited to, book clubs, literature circles, graphic organizers, think-pair-shares, and mind mapping. Students should be given ample opportunities to read, respond, and share both orally and in writing.
