Compound sentences have two or more independent clauses joined by conjunctions or semicolons: The rats play, and the mice run away, or Rats play; mice run away. Complex sentences contain an independent or main clause joined with an independent or subordinate clause: Rats play when they encounter mice, or What mice do always attracts rats. Compound-complex sentences have at least two main clauses and two subordinate clauses: If you snap your fingers, the rats will play and the mice will run away.
