Answer to Question 1

Answer: Reading instruction differs in the elementary grades in that much more independent work takes place, yet students may still be in need of teacher support. There is a diminished focus on skill development. Reading in the content areas is emphasized. Reading focuses on informational texts. Ways to support middle school readers can include: incorporating a variety of genres, reading a variety of formats (websites, magazines, textbooks, maps, comics, etc.), using graphic organizers, and teaching strategies to interpret visual information. Students need to be guided in their ability to engage in self-directed inquiry and research projects.
