Answer to Question 1

Answer: Skinnerian Theory:
1. Language takes place through shaping, which controls how speech sounds are acquired.
2. Later, children learn how to acquire abilities such as naming objects through a process called discriminate learning. This is called shaping.
3. Through a process of reinforcing for somebut not allresponses, a baby learns to discriminate.
4. Imitation also plays a role.
Psycholinguistic Theory:
1. Humans have innate capabilities, which predispose them to learning language. Language acquisition is like other genetically determined skills that humans are programmed to learn.
2. A Language acquisition device (LAG) explains how children acquire and process language.
3. There are two types of syntactic structures in grammar: the deep structure and the surface structure. Deep structures help us to understand meaning and surface structures help us to phonetically represent meaning.
4. A set of transformational rules helps us to move from the deep to surface structure and back again.
