Answer: The ability to engage in a conversation where there is a true exchange of ideas, with both parties willing and able to listen to each other's point of view, is an essential skill. The role of oral language in our classroom is critical for our students who will be entering a workforce very different from today's workforce. Talk improves student's abilities to communicate. Talking and listening promote a deeper understanding of text. Talk promotes more critical thinking and problem solving. Students' competence with the oral language system, particularly with the representation function, directly impacts how well they will progress within the written system.
