2. They emerged as a response to Western and Japanese influence in the form of trade goods.
3. Cargo cult movements centered on prophets who gathered followings and status by predicting the arrival of the goods, first in ships, then, after World War II, in airplanes.
4. These Melanesian cultures changed because the value placed on manufactured goods replaced the value placed on indigenous valuables.
