1. The Kurdish population is between 20 million and 30 million people.
2. They speak various dialects of the Kurdish language.
3. They are mostly Sunni Muslims.
4. Most are pastoralists, but modern nations have cut across many herding routes.
5. They fit the definition of a nation because they are a distinct population that is not associated with a state but exists between several existing states, mostly Turkey and Iraq.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: The ideal answer will include:
1. The Tisza River crisis was caused by the breach of a dam that held mining waste.
2. It killed fish, waterfowl, and livestock, and left crops unsellable. Heavy-metal residue continues to pose a threat.
3. The Hungarian government was slow to pursue claims against Romania or the corporation responsible.
4. Explanations for this lack of action include the possibility that the Hungarian government simply did not take environmental concerns seriously, or that it did not want to endanger the ethnic Hungarians living in Romania with an international confrontation.
5. The EU represented a larger political system under which more substantial action could be taken.
