1. Status is a general term for a person's category, which often relates to his or her position or standing within the community.
2. Ascribed positions are attributes gained at birth that may automatically place someone into a status category.
3. An example would be race. In societies where this is a consideration, a person's physical characteristics may place him or her in a higher or lower status category.
4. An achieved position is one that is gained through actions in the course of a person's life.
5. An example is class, which assigns status to wealth and is understood within the society to have been the product of a person's own efforts.
