Answer to Question 1

Controversy: Disagreement about content and how best to teach it. Some believe formal instruction is unnecessary or harmful. Some believe it's a key component of language arts instruction. Grammar instruction does not necessarily lead to improved oral language and writing. Nonstandard Dialects: explain that Standard English is the language of school; call Standard English Book Language to introduce proofreading for usage errors in student writing.

Answer to Question 2

Repetition, integration, and meaningful use. Word walls  repeated exposure (display), thematically related, used for writing. Word sorts  from thematically related set of words, not a worksheet. Word posters  an authentic activity, words from thematically related set of words.
