Answer to Question 1

Students engage in research based on questions they have posed, based on interest or thematic unit of study. After researching and preparing reports, students share their learning with the class. Possible projects: class collaboration reports, individual reports, multigenre projects. Practical application will vary by student.

Emergent Spelling: String of letters, letter-like forms, not associated with phonemes / MNX (rainbow). Letter-Name Spelling: Use letter-sound correspondence; consonant blends, digraphs, short vowels / CLEN (clean). Within-Word Spelling: Long vowel patterns, r-controlled vowels; may confuse patterns and order / SOPE (soap). Syllables and Affixes Spelling: Spelling patterns for multisyllabic words; inflectional endings, apostrophes / BABYIES (babies). Derivational Relations Spelling: Focus on meaning principle; learn Latin and Greet root words, affixes / CRITASIZE (criticize)
