Answer to Question 1

Examine a piece that the student has already proofread to eliminate careless or handwriting errors. Classify errors according to stage of spelling development; stage with most errors is child's developmental level. Examine errors to determine patterns, which indicate instructional priorities. Examining errors provides useful information about what kids know, what they're using and confusing, and what they're ready to learn. Students at different stages need to learn different things. Individualized spelling lists may be useful.
