1. Social inequality is reflected in birth patterns.
2. Middle-class and upper-class people have fewer children and higher survival rates.
3. Among the poor, fertility and mortality rates are high.
4. An increasing trend is surrogate motherhood, a practice in which poorer women are paid to birth children.

Answer: The ideal answer will include:
1. It is a rational response to conditions when there is a high need for labor and many tasks.
2. Children are needed to work land, care for animals, etc.
3. In some areas, such as North India, having many children, especially sons, is a sign of status and wealth.
