Answer to Question 1

Young children's writing; K and 1st grade. Scribbles, letter-like forms, random letter strings. Varying levels of grapheme-phoneme correspondence, use of spelling rules. Importance: gives freedom to write without adult criteria; children may be more motivated to write or attempt spelling; less incidence of copying from books or charts; reflects children's knowledge of written language.

Conversations - taking turns, redirecting talk, sharing ideas, offering opinions and suggestions. Asking questions - asking literal, inferential, and critical questions; evaluating. Retelling stories - organizing, visualizing, identifying big ideas, summarizing. Dramatic activities - activating background knowledge, elaborating, responding to nonverbal cues, monitoring
