Explain why standards are important to early childhood educators' planning, teaching, and assessing.

Standards define the knowledge and skills that all children need to attain. Because they identify what all children must know and be able to do, they inform teachers about what they should teach and what level of child performance they should expect. Standards do not tell teachers what curriculum to use or what instructional strategies to use in their classrooms. When teachers plan their lessons, they use standards to guide their decision making about such instructional features as the kinds of books to read to their children, the materials they might select to use with their children, the explicit teaching instruction they might provide, the kinds of center time activities to provide their children, and what and how to assess their children's learning.
