Graft rejection is slowed through the use of chemical agents that interfere with the immune response process. Included are corticosteroids, cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), and azathioprine (Imuran). This chemical therapy is referred to as immunosuppressive (the administration of agents that significantly interfere with the ability of the immune system to respond to antigenic stimulation by inhibition of cellular and humoral immunity) therapy.
