Answer to Question 1

D
Uric acid is the by-product of purine metabolism. Elevations of uric acid in an older adult with acute inflammation of a joint are often diagnostic of gouty arthritis. Bilirubin (response A) is the product of red blood cell destruction and is not related to gout. Urea nitrogen (response B) and creatinine (response C) are waste products of metabolism and are used to measure renal function. BUN and creatinine levels are not elevated in gout.

Answer to Question 2

C
Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine are waste products of metabolism that are excreted by the kidneys. Increased levels of serum BUN and creatinine may indicate decreased kidney function. Responses A, B, and D are not monitored by serum BUN and creatinine levels.
