Answer to Question 1

B
The primary purpose of the advance directive is to follow the wishes of the person who wrote it. A secondary benefit is to prevent others from being able to abuse the individual if he or she should become incompetent. The state has the right to assign independent individuals to make health-care decisions for incompetent individuals; however, an advance directive would prevent state intervention.

Answer to Question 2

A
A fecal impaction causes a bladder outlet obstruction, which can cause overflow urinary incontinence. Signs and symptoms include constipation and frequent dripping urine. Responses B, C, and D are incorrect.
