Answer to Question 1

C
Ordinarily, the patient would impulsively engage in self-mutilation. When he or she is able to delay the action and seek the more adaptive coping strategy of talking with the nurse, the nurse can correctly evaluate the patient as showing improvement. The other responses suggest use of idealization, manipulation, impulsive behavior, and devaluation, all symptomatic of the disorder.

Answer to Question 2

D
Having a parent with a substance abuse problem has been designated an adverse psychosocial condition that increases the risk of a child developing a psychiatric condition. Being in a middle-income family and being the oldest child are not considered psychosocial adversity. Having a family history of schizophrenia presents a risk, but an alcoholic parent in the family is more imminent.
