By the age of 60, a person's gastric secretions decrease to 70 to 80 of those of the average adult. A decrease in pepsin may hinder protein digestion, whereas a decrease in hydrochloric acid and intrinsic factor may lead to malabsorption of iron, vitamin B12, calcium, and folic acid. This, combined with atrophy of the mucosa and a decrease in gastric secretions, increases the incidence of pernicious anemia, osteoporosis, vitamin B deficiency, and iron deficiency anemia.
