The periodical Historical Novels Review indicates that a historical novel:
 
  a. must be accurate in every detail in order to be classified as true historical fictionotherwise, it should be termed fiction.
  b. does not have to be completely historically accurate as long as the historical events are accurate and are placed in context with other social and cultural events.
  c. was set in the past when it was originally written and that takes place at least one generation (approximately 15-20 years) in the past from the date of its original publication.
  d. must be set at least 50 years in the past and that the author must base the book on historical research rather than on personal experiences.
