In Reading Don't Fix No Chevys, Smith and Wilhelm (2002) concluded:
 
  a. Graphic novels and comic books are more popular with girls than boys.
  b. Girls prefer visual text and judge a book by its cover.
  c. Boys seem to prefer nonfiction, magazines, and newspapers and prefer short texts or texts with short sections while girls enjoy leisure reading more than boys.
  d. Both boys and girls prefer leisure reading to about the same degree.
