(1) subgoals or portions of the overall task (e.g., breaking the task into ten steps), (2) ultimate goals (e.g., the completion of the entire task), and (3) time-oriented goals (e.g., spending three hours studying).

(1) The individual must expect to receive the reward upon completing the task. (2) The reward must be something important to the individual. (3) The reward usually must be tangible.
