Answer to Question 1

Because of hectic parental schedules, it may be difficult for them to arrange appointments with a clinician. Observation in the school may be more convenient. In addition, the setting is a natural one for a child, so observations can take place in a place that is normal for the child. The clinician is also able to observe more complex interactions that are apparent in an office visit. Finally, the school may be part of the problem; observing behavior in that setting may give a clue to the source of the difficulty.

Answer to Question 2

When scientists observe behavior, it is with a specific goal. As such, it is critical to identify the nature of the behaviors that are important. Otherwise the information gathered won't systematically relate to the question the researcher wants to answer.
