Answer to Question 1

Refining the topic

Answer to Question 2

Open-ended takes more time, requires respondent to have writing or verbal skills, easier for respondents to get off track. Interviewers must write extensive answers. Analysis is of the data is complex and time-consuming. It is very useful for exploratory research when a researcher knows little about the issue. More effective when the goal is to capture a respondent's thinking process. Closed-ended requires many design decisions to eliminate bias. Format is faster and easier for both respondents and
researcher.
