On March 1, 1983, a rare tornado cut a 5-km swath of destruction through downtown Los Angeles, damaging more than 100 homes and businesses, and injuring 33 people. And during the summer of 2010, three tornadoes actually touched down in New York City. One tornado (on July 25) caused only minimal damage but injured seven people.

Although tornadoes have occurred at all times of the day and night, they are most frequent in the late afternoon (between 3:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M.), when the surface air is most unstable; they are least frequent in the early morning before sunrise, when the atmosphere is most stable.
