For years Hawaii has been represented as an exotic, distant, and tropical paradise to most Americans. Tourism has really increased, and there has been a steady advertising campaign to keep this image. Tourism is now the 1 income in Hawaii. On a typical day, 60,000 tourists flock to high-rise hotels and condos around Waikiki Beach and another 50,000 fan out in other directions across the state. Tourism is seen as a mixed blessing since it fluctuates as the economy fluctuates. When times are good, tourists are plentiful. However, they are noted for producing congestion and pollution problems. On the other hand though, they generally have money to spend. About twenty-five percent of tourists in Hawaii are Japanese. Hawaii can expect about 7 million tourists in a typical year.
