Answer to Question 1

The French long lot allows each farm access to the river. The lots are narrow and long.

Answer to Question 2

Migration has traditionally been towards areas perceived to contain greater economic opportunity. The easier it is to move about, the more likely this push pull balance will be the primary influence on the migrating decision.
