The United States built a land empire through warfare and purchases, including the Louisiana Purchase (from France) of 1803; the acquisition of Florida from Spain in 1819; the addition of Texas, the Southwest, and California as spoils of war with Mexico in 1845 and 1848; the Gadsden Purchase from Mexico of a strip of Arizona and New Mexico in 1853; and Alaska, bought from Russia in 1867.
